Sunday, 26 July 2009 - Sofia Minson - NZ Artist solo exhibition at McCarthy Gallery Auckland

Sofia Minson, one of our talented New Zealand artists on our Arts and Culture category has her fifth solo exhibition featuring her new paintings at the McCarthy Gallery in Auckland. Sofia’s exhibition opened on Saturday 18th July and runs until the 13th of August 2009. Sofia is a talented inspirational young NZ artist which translates through her work and passion for supporting many national charities. Earlier this year in February, Sofia shaved her head as part of the Shave an Artist event to help raise money for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.

‘The Kiwi Story’ is proud to showcase Sofia’s work and encourage those in the Auckland region during this time to check out her exhibition. The McCarthy Gallery is located in central Auckland at the Axis Building 1:9 Basement 91 St Georges Bay Road in Parnell. Full media release below:

Media Release – 24 July 2009

Soulful Paintings Wow Aucklanders

On Saturday 18th July new paintings by Sofia Minson were revealed in Auckland’s high-end Parnell Arts district.  The exhibition is her fifth solo at only 24 years old.

Sofia’s eerie landscapes and striking oil portraits occupy a timeless realm of their own.  She says “on the surface my work seems to emphasize cultural and ethnic differences but on a deeper level, each painting aims to draw the viewer into the soul of the person or environment that is being depicted.  It is our experience of this wairua or spirit that connects us together.”

In her cozy converted studio/garage in Glen Innes, she worked away at 9 large, detailed pieces for the show.  Some are over 2 meters wide taking her months to complete.

The young artist’s sought-after paintings grace the walls of homes all over the world.  They have won national art awards and have been exhibited in the USA, Turkey, Europe and throughout New Zealand.

In 2004 while studying interior architecture at AUT, it was actually through Painting that Sofia discovered success and also a vital link to her roots.  “Born in Auckland, I spent much of my childhood overseas in Samoa, Sri Lanka and China.  When we returned as a family I felt quite disconnected from New Zealand.  Painting enabled me to research and explore my own heritage as well as reconnect with the richness of our culture and land”.

Art has offered profound opportunities in Sofia’s life. “I’ve had the privilege of meeting such interesting people and being able to travel with my paintings.  Now I’m in a position where I’m able to give back.”   Sofia has auctioned off her artworks for many national charities and in February this year also shaved her head to help personally raise $10,000 for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.

She is currently making a whole series of collaborative acrylic paintings with autistic children. These will be auctioned off at the “Art for Autism” event at the Stamford Plaza on the 4th September 2009 to raise funds for the construction of New Zealand’s first state-of-the-art holistic development centre for children living with Autism.

Sofia Minson’s solo exhibition at McCarthy Gallery, Auckland, will run until 13 August 2009.

Thursday, 7 May 2009 - NZ Music Month - Guitar World Record Challenge!

This month is New Zealand music month and like the businesses listed on ‘The Kiwi Story’ there are so many amazingly talented musicians in NZ that don’t nearly get enough exposure as they deserve. So we hope you go out and support all the events happening around the country for NZ Music Month. There are plenty of gigs on so check out the NZ Music Month website for a list of what’s on.

One of the biggest events that caught our attention is the Guitar World Record Challenge. Basically the aim of the event is to break the world record for the largest guitar ensemble ever by playing along to the iconic New Zealand song “Why does love do this to me?” with legendary kiwi musician Jordan Luck from The Exponents!

The song is very easy to play (only involves 5 simple chords) and I’m sure everyone in NZ knows the words! So if you play guitar come along to the event and help NZ make history. We have registered and will be part of the action. According to the website the current record is 1951 guitar players set in 2008 in Poland so if we get 2000 kiwis along we’ll crack that record. So register now and get practising the event is on 11am Sunday 24th May 2009 at Sky City Federal St Auckland. Below is a video of the event details. See you there!

Friday, 17 April 2009 - Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park

Over the Easter Holidays we finally got around to doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is rated as the best one day trek in New Zealand and widely regarded in the top 10 day treks in the world! It certainly deserves these accolades as the scenery is truly amazing and world unique it’s like walking through the Lord of the Rings set! Every corner you turn is a picture perfect opportunity. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is located within the Tongariro National park which is a world heritage site.  The Tongariro National Park itself is located in the central North Island of New Zealand near the town of Ohakune.

The trek took us around about 7 hours to complete. Essentials for the trip are lots of drinking water food (there is no guaranteed drinking water on the track), warm clothing (the weather can be highly unpredictable at 9am at the beginning it was freezing cold vs midday where it was warm and sunny) and good shoes (preferably hiking boots) since almost all of the track is on volcanic terrain thus can be very uneven and slippery. More information on gear and preparation is on the official website www.tongarirocrossing.org.nz

Below are a few photos taken on the track with a few the highlights Red Crater, Mt Ngauruhoe (AKA Mt doom in Lord of the Rings) and The Blue Lake.

If you’re looking for a proper organised tour Walking Legends provides excellent personalised and professional walking tours across the North Island. For the Tongariro Alpine Crossing they have a special 4 day packaged Tongariro hiking tour. In addition to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing you’ll experience additional trips to Lake Rotopounamu (the greenstone lake), Mt Ruapehu (North Island’s tallest mountain), and the beautiful Taranaki Falls. Included is 3 night’s accommodation staying at a “private lodge accommodation overlooking the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Tongariro National Park”

For more information and tour dates visit the walking legends website. They also have a range of other fantastic walking tours across the North Island so if you’re into tramping and looking to do the best walks in New Zealand check out Walking Legends.
